Welcome to the Homemade on the Homestead family!

We want to invite you along on our journey as we plan our early retirement (hopefully no later than age 45!) and begin looking at living off the land to keep a minimal budget and enjoy early retirement. It is our goal to encourage you in the path to a more happy, more secure and free lifestyle by sharing and teaching the skills that lead to greater sustainability and self-sufficiency for you, your loved ones and your community.

We started 6 years ago while living in the city doing what everyone else was trying to do...
  • Getting a good job
  • Saving money for a house and retirement
  • Moving up the corporate ladder
...however, we were both so exhausted that we only saw each other for a couple of hours a day and barely shared our meals together. It was time for a change!
drowning in debt
We decided it was time to start living a healthier life. What's the point of life if all you do is work?! We decided we wanted:
  • to be more self-sufficient
  • to have more time with each other
  • to retire early to enjoy the greater things in life
We started by buying and renovating a house with on 1/2 acre...

renovations

It is amazing how much money you can save by completing home renovations on your own. And incredibly rewarding to walk through your house thinking, "Yeah, I fixed that!" We spent our first couple of years learning basic electric, plumbing, drywall, and flooring work before moving on to our next stage.

Then we started gardening...
table garden
back yard garden

We started small with potted plants around the house. Eventually, we started expanding to a full-blown garden in our back yard. We have plans to continue expanding our garden as we learn more about how to grow different fruits and vegetables. This is both a better-tasting option for our food and a great money saver!

And now we've started canning!
canned chicken broth
ball jars for next year

We are now in the process of preparing our own foods. We freeze, can, and dehydrate food to eat later rather than having to make regular trips to the supermarket. We have also started splitting wood and use a woodstove to heat our house - this saves us a TON of money in electricity.
